Athlete Assistance Program

and

Sport Psychology Consultation

C&A's Athlete Assistance Program (AAP) provides the link between problems and solutions.

Despite increased management support for help with player and staff personal issues, there is a remaining challenge to motivate individuals to use the necessary services early to avoid the escalation of major personal and professional issues that can limit careers. Your AAP can remove the initial reluctance in asking for help. By taking the time to nurture the emotional, physical and spiritual areas of life, player and team goals are easier to achieve and sports performance is greatly enhanced.

It is the philosophy of C&A that it is first necessary to address any existing personal concerns of players. In doing so, these problems are resolved so that players do not report to the playing field stressed and preoccupied. This approach enables them, as well as their teammates, to benefit from performance enhancing techniques and sport psychology consultation.

Background and Experience

Under the direction of Gary Crites, MS, JD, Crites & Associates has over 20 years of experience in working with professional sports teams including the Boston Red Sox, Florida Marlins, and Milwaukee Brewers baseball clubs. C&A's work with these clubs includes overall program design, implementation, and service delivery for major and minor league players, player development staff and scouting personnel. In addition, C&A provides Employee Assistance Program services to the front office staff of many client baseball clubs.

Hands on Training for Players and Player Development Staff

The success of your organization depends upon the physical and emotional health of each person. No matter how professionally successful they may be, it is crucial they nurture personal relationships to ensure an integrated lifestyle. C&A's broad brush approach offers many types of training to help players deal with particularly stressful, but common, situations. On-site seminars include both player development staff and player educational presentations on a variety of health topics such as:

  • Player Code of Conduct
  • Adapting to Change
  • Cultural Differences
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease
  • Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling, Food, and Sexual Addictions
  • Risks Associated with Steroid Use and other Supplement Use

All training sessions include training materials and specially designed manuals and resource guides.

Skill Building for Player Development Staff

This comprehensive program provides for analysis of management and coaching styles as they relate to individual and team goals and objectives. Participants will broaden their current techniques by learning and employing effective new strategies for group problem solving and communicating for results.

Consultation to Management and Player Development Staff

To protect your investment, C&A can create policies to ensure the health and safety of your players and prospects. C&A consults with professional sports teams on alcohol and drug policy development that includes the issues surrounding drug testing of minor league players. Crites and Associates has many years of experience in coordinating the alcohol and drug testing programs of its client sports teams and clubs.

A Visible Presence Both On and Off the Field

Building strong relationships with coaches, player development staff and players is a key ingredient in the success of your Athlete Assistance Program. That's why routine visits to Spring Training Camp, your minor league clubs, and instructional leagues are an integral part of C&A's Athlete Assistance Program. This visibility is valuable by helping players feel comfortable in reaching out for assistance.

Foreign Born Player Services

Offering parallel services for foreign born players is crucial in any successful AAP. That's why C&A has pioneered the concept of the Foreign Born Player Program that details a comprehensive design for your Hispanic/Latino and other foreign born players. It provides the support necessary to ease their transition into American culture in such a way that players and player development staff can devote their full attention and energies to the player's skill development. This program includes:

  • Individual Evaluation --- C&A determines the player's need and provides:
    • Language skills development in native language and English
    • Additional communication skills
    • Cultural adjustment skills
    • Immediate counseling for homesickness
  • Education and Orientation to U.S. Culture --- C&A introduces foreign born players to U.S. culture and addresses issues such as:
    • Public support services, i.e. law enforcement and 911 emergency services
    • Trans-border laws
    • American laws regarding assault, date rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment
    • Dating and other culturally different relationship issues
    • Handling prejudice, bias, and discrimination
    • Drug, Alcohol and Firearms laws such as driving while intoxicated, concealed weapons, etc.
    • Basic time management
    • Obtaining housing
  • Specific Counseling Services --- C&A identifies and addresses mental health needs such as:
    • Needs assessment by a language-specific assessor
    • Developing ongoing counseling plan sensitive to player's cultural background

Services to the Scouting Department

Crites & Associates provides tailored player surveys, questionnaires, and published materials to more fully evaluate and asses the prospect's opportunity for success in professional baseball. In addition, for signed players, C&A can provide important information on a player's interpersonal skills, emotional makeup, coping skills, stress management potential, coach-ability, decision making, judgment and impulse control.
